Siyakwazi Grahamstown Youth Camp and World Population Day 2018

PSH, the Siyakwazi Youth Network and the Departments of Social Development brought young people together from various districts in the Eastern Cape Province for a youth camp at Rhodes University in Grahamstown from 10 – 12 July 2018. The camp programme included: (a) an introduction to the Siyakwazi Youth Network; (b) celebration of World Population Day 2018 (WPD2018); (c) training on a range of Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE) topics; (d) identification of key youth issues, and (e) the development of advocacy plans for youth involvement in their communities.

On 11 July 2018, World Population Day observed the theme, "Family Planning is a Human Right." This day was initiated to combat the issue of the growing population and raise awareness among the public about the same. World Population Day, on a vast scale, focuses on the need and importance of controlling the increasing world population. World Population Day 2018, however, focused on the importance of Family Planning. The theme, " Family Planning is a Human Right," for the first time, gave response to a 50-year-old legislation which states that women and girls can refuse to have multiple pregnancies placed too close, if they wanted. PSH, the Siyakwazi Youth Network and the Departments of Social Development dedicated the youth camp programme to the Celebration of World Population Day on 11 July 2018.
