During March and April 2018 Partners in Sexual Health and the Siyakwazi Youth Network, in collaboration with the Department of Social Development’s National Population Unit, facilitated Capacity Building Training on Intergenerational Communication on Adolescent Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (IC ASRHR) for Youth from 4 districts in the Western Cape and Eastern Cape Provinces.

The core focus of the IC ASRHR capacity building trainings is to create partnerships with civil society which would result in greater synergy in addressing ASRHR, including the prevention of HIV and teenage pregnancies and gender mainstreaming issues; to promote communication and dialogue between young people and civil society leaders including the local media; to increase access to ASRHR information and services by training (including youth) leaders in communities to work with young people in school, out of school and the community; to increase awareness, knowledge and sensitivity of parents and teachers to the needs of adolescents about self-esteem building, sexual decision-making and reproductive health; promoting positive sexual and reproductive health behaviour of adolescent youth; improving the greater participation of adolescent and youth in HIV Testing and Services (HTS); and to create an enabling environment that supports adolescents’ rights and responsibilities towards access and utilisation of services that promote their sexual and reproductive health and rights, thereby encouraging the delay of early sexual debut and consequent teenage pregnancies.
